Drywall Finishing - What It Is and How It Works

Drywall finishing, often called taping and mudding, is what turns raw drywall into a smooth, seamless surface ready for paint or wallcoverings.

The Standard 3-Coat System

We use a three-step process to ensure flat, invisible seams:

1. First Coat - The Tape Coat
Joint compound is applied to all seams, inside corners, and over every screw/nail. Tape is then embedded into the compound to strengthen the joints and prevent cracking. Excess mud is removed and allowed to dry.

2. Second Coat - The Fill Coat
A second, wider coat of compound is applied over the taped joints and fasteners. Edges are feathered out to blend into the surrounding board, filling any voids and building up a flat surface. Allowed to dry fully.

3. Third Coat - The Finish Coat
A final thin coat is applied and feathered out even wider. This is what makes the seams disappear. Once dry, the surface is lightly sanded to remove any ridges or tool marks.

Understanding Finish Levels

Finish levels are set by the Gypsum Association. The right level depends on your final paint and lighting:

Level 0: No finishing. Used only for temporary walls or areas that will not be seen.

Level 1: Compound on seams and fasteners only, no tape. For service areas, attics, and spaces where looks don't matter.

Level 2: Tape embedded with one coat over joints and fasteners. Good for garages, storage rooms, and areas that will get heavy texture.

Level 3: Tape plus two coats of compound. Intended for walls that will receive medium to heavy texture or thick wallcoverings.

Level 4: Tape plus three coats, sanded smooth. This is the industry standard for flat paint, light textures, and most residential/commercial work.

Level 5: Three coats plus a full skim coat of compound or high-build primer over the entire surface. The highest grade finish - required for glossy paints, critical lighting, and high-end work.

Can It Be Done in Two Coats?

With some setting-type or lightweight compounds, two coats can work in a pinch. For a truly flat, professional result that won't show under paint, three coats is the standard.

Final Sanding

After the final coat dries, we finish with a light sand using 120-150 grit to leave a flawless surface without scuffing the paper.

The right prep in this stage is what makes the final paint job look perfect.
